THE BEST BLACK PAINT FOR YOUR STAIRS: ADVICE FROM SOMEONE WHO’S PAINTED A LOT OF STEPS!

Black-painted stairs can be a stunning feature in a home, but you’ll want to make sure you get the right paint for the job.

As a high-traffic area, it’s all about the quality and quantity of the black paint. Be prepared: you’re going to want to do a ~lot~ of layers.

HOW TO PAINT OVER OLD PAINT ON THE STAIRS

If your house is old, then layers of paint from times gone by can make this a very tricky task, especially if it’s lead-based paint.

More on how to deal with lead-painted stairs here.

It’s best to strip away old paint using a paint stripper, like Bartoline TX10 from Amazon.

If the paint isn’t lead-based, but the surface of the stairs is uneven and bumpy then use an electrical hand-sander to smooth it out, otherwise, just give it a key using fine-grit sandpaper.

HIGH-TRAFFIC PAINT FOR WOODEN STAIRS

As I said before, the quality of the black paint for your stairs is important because it’s a high-traffic area; epoxy and acrylic paints are going to be a lot more durable than anything else.

More importantly, though, you want to have a good primer and overcoat. This will get you long-lasting results.

I’ve spent almost three Christmasses in my house now and while I adore my bright-green painted staircase, it’s the bane of my life – it chips easily and I have to do paint touch-ups a couple of times a year to keep it looking pretty.

Therefore, I would consider a stair runner – you can still get the look you’re after by painting down the sides, without the extra work.
