Want to know how to make your bedroom happier? Discover tips for a cheerful room below.
Moving around a lot in my twenties meant I inhabited a lot of different bedrooms; in my experience, to make it a happier space, you need to identify the issues first.
For instance, if your room is dark then lean into that with a dark colour palette – it will feel cosy and warm – a happy space you can hunker down in and hide from the elements.
With any interior space, it’s always best to work with what you’ve got. In one place I rented, there was an old green carpet that, sadly, wasn’t going anywhere so I made it work with the colour scheme. Eventually, I learnt to love that green carpet, stains and all.

Being surrounded by things you love is a great way to make your bedroom a happier place, but know when to pair it back: a clutter-free space is a happier place (you can quote me on that).
Tip for making your bedroom feel less cluttered: give everything a specific place – hang up a shelf for your trinkets, get those family photos framed or on the wall and find some storage for the beauty products on your bedside table.
Some may enjoy a more maximalist style than others (yours truly being one of those ‘others’) and enjoy being around more ‘stuff’, which is fine, but being surrounded by things that make you happy and things that are just clutter are different things: make sure you can distinguish between the two.
Tip: have a big clear-out and sell or give to charity anything you don’t need.
As the Queen of decluttering, Marie Kondo, would say, if it doesn’t bring you joy then get it outta’ here. Well, she probably wouldn’t say it like that, but you get my drift.

Bringing the outside in also makes your bedroom happier. According to experts, indoor plants can improve your mood by 20%. Not only seeing, but smelling the plants helps.
Odours have a massive effect on your mood so lighting scented candles and burning incense can bring instant joy too.
WHAT MAKES A BEDROOM RELAXING
For your bedroom to be relaxing, it needs to be comfortable. How can you achieve this? You want your bedroom to ignite your senses, be that touch, smell, sights, or sounds. Think plump cushions, a puffy duvet and fresh sheets: add a fluffy rug to step on when you get out of bed in the morning. Be honest with yourself here, when was the last time you invested in new sheets or bedding? Maybe it’s time to treat yourself – I’m sure you deserve it.

WHAT COLOUR SHOULD I PAINT MY BEDROOM TO MAKE IT HAPPIER
Yellow is the happiest colour on the colour wheel but if it’s too intense it can make you feel manic; you want colours with soothing tones on the walls like blue, pink and green. Then you can bring in other colours with accessories where they won’t overpower your mood.

WHAT SHOULD NOT BE IN A BEDROOM
I love red, and little accents of it can be great, but I’d avoid having too much of this colour in your bedroom. Red is a very stimulating colour so it can have a negative effect on your sleep – and we all know how important a good night’s rest is.
Work! Working in your bedroom and working from your bed specifically, links our beds with wakefulness which can, again, have a terrible effect on our sleep.
