Looking for an honest Topps Tiles coloured grout review? You’ve come to the right place.
To date, Topps Tiles offer two different types of brightly coloured grout: BAL Micromax 2 and Matrix Collection. As someone who’s used both, I’m going to let you know how I found them.
When I first realised Topps Tiles sold grout in different colours, and I’m not just talking grey, white or black, I was over the moon. My partner insisted we have a white kitchen with white tiles (so we wouldn’t put off potential buyers when we came to sell), but I knew I could persuade him to let me add a little bit of colour in between the tiles – assuring him it would be easy to cover with a black grouting pen if/when we needed to.
Once I’d done the kitchen in BAL Micromax 2 ‘Powdered Rose‘, and we’d both fallen in heart eyes emoji, there was no stopping me when it came to the bathroom and my desk. Oh, and the kitchen table! For the latter three places, I used Matrix Collection in ‘Blossom Pink‘ and ‘Green‘.
If you’re considering taking the colourful-plunge then keep reading below and I can hopefully answer some questions for you.
WHAT IS BAL MICROMAX 2?
BAL Micromax 2 is a water and frost resistant, flexible, rapid-setting grout, with a built in antimicrobial protection for walls/floors.
DOES BAL MICROMAX 2 COLOURED GROUT NEED SEALING?
I didn’t seal my kitchen splash back and counter – yeah, I tiled my kitchen counter – almost two years down the line, I haven’t had any problems – it’s still in good nick. I’m sure sealing it wouldn’t be a bad thing; it might extend its life, however, you don’t ~need~ to.
SHOULD GROUT BE LIGHTER OR DARKER THAN THE TILE?
When it comes to colours, you do you! Both options look great, however, if you want some coloured grout inspiration then read: ‘WHAT COLOUR GROUT SHOULD I USE FOR MY TILES?’
IS BAL MICROMAX 2 GROUT WATERPROOF?
BAL Micromax 2 grout is water and frost resistant.
DOES BAL MICROMAX 2 GIVE AN EVEN COLOUR?
What I love about BAL Micromax 2 coloured grout is how the colour is pre-mixed in the grout for you so it gives an even colour throughout. This also means you don’t have to mix the whole packet up at once; you can come back to it or save some for snags.

DOES GROUT DRY LIGHTER OR DARKER?
Because grout is mixed with water for the application, the colour dries a lot lighter than how it looks when you’re applying it.
HOW DO YOU MAKE THE COLOURED GROUT?
BAL Micromax 2 is a pre-mixed colour so it just needs mixing with water, like most other grouts. Make sure you follow the manufacturer’s guide on the back of the packet for the best result.
WHAT IS THE MATRIX COLLECTION?
The Matrix collection is a creative colour collection available at Topps Tiles; they offer 23 bold and vibrant colours.
DOES THE MATRIX GROUT NEED SEALING?
When I used the ‘Green’ grout in my bathroom, the colour bled for a long time after and if I gave it a good scrub now, it still would. Therefore, I would recommend sealing this grout to lock in the colour. I found this less of a problem with the ‘Blossom Pink’ on my desk – I guess because it’s a lighter colour and it’s in a room that doesn’t get wet and damp.

DOES THE MATRIX COLOURED GROUT FROM TOPPS TILES GIVE AN EVEN COLOUR?
The Matrix Collection grout comes with a base grout and a colour sachet that you mix together yourself so you have to be precise with the mixing to get an even colour.
I did find spots of yellow in my Green Matrix grout when I was applying it, however, they were easy to mix as I went and it didn’t affect the overall finish.
